Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Numbing makes a treatment more comfortable. Numbing cream is applied to the skin 20–45 minutes before the treatment and dampens pain in the top layers of the skin. For deeper or more sensitive treatments, a doctor or practitioner can give a small anaesthetic injection, which numbs an area completely for one to two hours. Numbing is booked as an add-on to the treatment.

  1. The practitioner goes through your health and any allergies.
  2. Numbing cream is applied and left to work for 20–45 minutes.
  3. For an injection, the anaesthetic is given with a thin needle.
  4. The treatment starts when the area is numb.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

  • Common: paleness, redness or slight swelling where the cream was.
  • Rare: an allergic reaction.
  • Very rare with an injection: dizziness, palpitations or numbness around the mouth.

Numbing cream does not hurt. An anaesthetic injection stings a little for a few seconds.

No downtime. The area can stay numb for one to two hours after an injection.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Never use more numbing cream, or a larger area, than the practitioner has decided.
  • Avoid biting or chewing numb lips or cheeks until the anaesthetic has worn off.

  • Treatments that feel uncomfortable, such as laser, microneedling and injections.
  • Anyone who is sensitive to pain.

  • Known allergy to anaesthetics.
  • Large skin areas with cream, unless the practitioner has assessed the amount.

  • Allergy to local anaesthetics.
  • Some heart diseases and liver disease, unless a doctor has cleared you.
  • Pregnancy, unless a doctor has cleared you.

Call 113 if you get breathing problems, facial swelling, severe dizziness or palpitations after numbing.
