Benefits

  • Lasting reduction in hair growth
  • Fewer ingrown hairs
  • The face and body
  • No downtime

Expected results

Hair growth becomes gradually thinner and less through the series. Most people have much less hair after a full series, but some maintenance is needed.

Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

The laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and heats the follicle, so it is damaged and produces thinner and fewer hairs. Only hairs in the growth phase are affected, which is why several treatments are needed. A diode laser is used on most skin types. The treatment works on dark hair but has little effect on blond, red and grey hair.

  • Usually six to eight treatments four to eight weeks apart, depending on the area.
  • The face often needs more treatments than the body.
  • Maintenance once or twice a year.

  1. The practitioner assesses your skin type and hair colour.
  2. The area is cleaned, and your eyes are protected.
  3. The laser is passed over the skin with cooling.
  4. The skin is cooled and soothed afterwards.

  • Shave the area the day before. Do not wax, pluck or use hair removal cream for the last four weeks.
  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and self-tan for four weeks before.
  • Come without cream, deodorant or make-up on the area.

From 15 minutes for small areas to about an hour for large areas.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 2–5 out of 10, like a snap or a warm prickle. Thin skin and areas with dense, dark hair are the most sensitive.

  • Common: redness and small bumps around the follicles for a few hours.
  • Uncommon: itching, dryness or ingrown hairs.
  • Rare: blisters, darker or lighter skin, or increased hair growth in nearby areas.

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas and hard exercise for the first day.
  • Do not wax or pluck between treatments. Shaving is fine.
  • Avoid sun and sunbeds, and use a high-factor sunscreen on the area.

No downtime. The skin can be red with small bumps around the follicles for a few hours. The treated hairs fall out within one to three weeks.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Laser gives a lasting reduction in hair growth, but rarely removes every hair. Some hairs grow back and need maintenance.
  • Hormonal changes can cause new hair growth.
  • Dark skin and tanned skin have a higher risk of pigment changes. The practitioner adapts the settings and can do a test patch.

  • Dark hair on light or medium skin.
  • Ingrown hairs or irritation after shaving.
  • Most body areas and the face.

  • Blond, red, grey or white hair. The laser has little effect on it.
  • Tanned skin. Wait until the tan has faded.
  • Increased hair growth caused by hormones, unless a doctor has assessed it.

After a full series, most people have much less hair. Maintenance once or twice a year keeps the result.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Sunburnt or recently tanned skin.
  • Infection, inflamed spots, eczema or wounds in the area.
  • Medicines that make the skin sensitive to light, unless the practitioner has cleared it.
  • Tattoos and moles in the area must be covered or avoided.

Contact the clinic if you get blisters, increasing pain or swelling, pus, yellow crusts or a fever. Also contact the clinic if a cold sore appears after treatment around the mouth.
