What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Permanent Makeup (PMU) Eyeliner - semi-permanent tattooing along the lash line.

Placement:

UPPER EYELINER:

  • Along upper lash line

  • Definition

  • Can be thin or thicker

  • Duration: 18-24 months

LOWER EYELINER:

  • Along lower lash line

  • Less common

  • Duration: 12-18 months

BOTH:

  • Upper + lower

  • Full definition

Styles:

LASH ENHANCEMENT:

  • Very thin line

  • Only along the lash line

  • Subtle, natural

CLASSIC LINER:

  • Thinner eyeliner

  • Defined, but natural

WINGED LINER:

  • With a "wing" at the outer corner

  • More dramatic

Procedure

  1. Consultation and design (30 min) - Style selection (thin/thick, wing, etc.), photography

  2. Numbing (20-30 min)

  3. PMU procedure (45-75 min)

  4. Aftercare instructions

Pain level, downtime and healing

Pain Level

Moderate discomfort. More sensitive than eyebrows. Anesthesia helps significantly, but does not eliminate all sensation.

Downtime

Physical: Minimal

Social: 3-7 days due to swelling and darkening of color

Healing Time

Day 0:

  • Darker than final result
  • Swelling (can be significant!)
  • Redness

Day 1-3:

  • Swelling (can be significant in some)
  • Heavy eyelids
  • Still dark color
  • Tenderness

Day 3-7:

  • Swelling subsides
  • Flaking begins
  • Itching

Week 2-4:

  • "Ghost phase" - looks pale

Side Effects

Very common:

  • Significant swelling (1-3 days in many)
  • Heavy eyelids
  • Redness

  • Uneven pigmentation (corrected during correction appointment)

Rare:

  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction

Aftercare

First week - CRITICAL:

  • Keep dry (3-5 days)
  • Wash gently
  • Healing ointment
  • No makeup
  • No contact lenses (first 3-5 days)
  • No mascara
  • Do not rub eyes
  • DO NOT PICK scabs

Week 2-8:

  • SPF around eyes
  • Be gentle with eye makeup
  • No retinol/AHA around eyes

Important information

CRITICALLY IMPORTANT:

  • Significant swelling the first 1-3 days is NORMAL
  • Heavy eyelids the first few days
  • Darker than final result the first week
  • No contact lenses the first 3-5 days
  • More sensitive area than eyebrows

Contraindications

Absolute:

  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding
  • Active eye infection
  • Blepharitis
  • Keloid tendency

Relative:

  • Very sensitive eyes
  • Contact lenses
  • Eye surgery (discuss)

Warning signs

Contact the clinic if:

  • Increasing swelling after day 3
  • Pus
  • Increasing pain
  • Vision problems
  • Signs of infection

Individual variations

Maintenance
