Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The ultrasound is focused into small points at set depths under the skin, including the connective tissue layer that surgeons tighten in a facelift. The heat makes the tissue contract and starts new collagen production. The skin becomes gradually tighter without damage to the surface. The treatment is used on the face, neck and body.

  • Usually one treatment for the face, sometimes two three months apart.
  • The body often needs two to three treatments.
  • Maintenance after 12–18 months.

  1. The practitioner assesses your skin and plans which depths to treat.
  2. The skin is cleansed, and ultrasound gel is applied.
  3. The device is moved over the skin in lines, with pulses of focused ultrasound.
  4. The gel is removed, and the skin is cared for.

  • Avoid filler and thread lifts in the area for the last two weeks, or follow the practitioner's advice.
  • Come without make-up or cream on the area.

The face takes 45–60 minutes. Smaller areas take less time.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 4–6 out of 10. It feels like heat, prickling or short jabs, most over bone and where the skin is thin.

  • Common: redness, slight swelling and tenderness.
  • Uncommon: numbness or tingling for a few weeks.
  • Rare: small bruises, temporary weakness of a facial nerve, or small burns.

  • You can wear make-up and carry on as normal.
  • Use moisturiser and sunscreen.
  • Wait two weeks before other treatments in the area.

No or little downtime. The skin can be slightly red and swollen for a few hours. Some people feel tenderness or tingling in the area for a few days or weeks.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • The result builds up gradually over two to three months.
  • The effect is moderate and natural. It does not replace a surgical lift.
  • HIFU does not reduce weight. On the body it tightens the skin and can reduce small fat deposits.

  • Mild to moderate laxity of the face, neck and jawline.
  • Skin that has lost firmness on the body, for example the abdomen, arms and thighs.
  • Anyone who wants a lift without surgery and with little downtime.

  • A lot of loose skin. Surgery gives a better result.
  • Very thin skin with little fat beneath. The treatment may then have less effect.

The skin becomes gradually tighter over two to three months. The effect often lasts 12–18 months, but the skin keeps ageing.

  • Pregnancy.
  • Wounds, infection or inflamed spots in the area.
  • Metal implants, a pacemaker or another electronic implant in the area.
  • Recent filler or thread lift in the area.

Contact the clinic if you get blisters, wounds, severe pain or weakness in the facial muscles after the treatment.
