Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

An assessment of assistive devices maps which devices can make your daily life safer and easier. This can be anything from a reacher and a shower chair to a walker, a wheelchair or memory aids. The practitioner looks at your activities, your body and your home, and recommends devices that suit you.

  1. You talk about your daily life and what is difficult.
  2. The practitioner sees how you do the activities, possibly in your home.
  3. The practitioner recommends assistive devices and shows how to use them.
  4. You get help with the application when relevant.

The assessment takes about an hour.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Assistive devices for a lasting need, one that lasts more than two years, can be borrowed from the NAV Assistive Technology Centre. The application usually goes through your municipality. Short-term needs are often covered by the municipality.
  • Many municipalities offer occupational therapy and everyday rehabilitation. You can ask your GP or your municipality what you are entitled to.

  • Anyone with reduced function after illness or injury, or with age.
  • Anyone who is afraid of falling at home.
  • Relatives who want to make daily life safer for someone close to them.

  • An acute illness or injury that needs a doctor. Contact your GP or the out-of-hours service first.
  • Anyone who needs help the same day. The out-of-hours service on 116 117 is then the right place.

Call 113 if you get sudden paralysis, a drooping face, difficulty speaking, chest pain or difficulty breathing. Contact your GP or the out-of-hours service on 116 117 if your function gets quickly worse.

Your needs can change. A new assessment can be done when your daily life changes.
