Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Cosmelan from Mesoestetic is a depigmenting treatment in two parts. At the clinic, a mask with depigmenting ingredients is applied to the skin. The mask stays on for several hours, for a time the practitioner decides, and is washed off at home. You then use a cream at home for several months. The treatment calms pigment production and is used for melasma and pigment spots.

  • One treatment at the clinic.
  • Home treatment with a cream for several months afterwards.
  • Check-ups at the clinic along the way.

  1. The practitioner assesses the pigmentation and your skin.
  2. The skin is cleansed and prepared.
  3. The mask is applied to the face or body.
  4. You get written instructions on when to wash off the mask and how to use the cream at home.

  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and self-tan for four weeks before.
  • Stop using retinol, acids and scrubs a week before.
  • Plan one to two weeks without strong sun or big social events.

The clinic appointment takes about an hour.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment does not hurt. The mask can sting and itch for the first hours.

  • Common: redness, stinging, itching, dryness and flaking.
  • Uncommon: strong irritation that needs a break from the cream.
  • Rare: darker pigment or an allergic reaction.

  • Follow the written plan for when to wash off the mask.
  • Use a mild cleanser, moisturiser and a high-factor sunscreen every day.
  • Do not peel off flaking skin.
  • Avoid sun and sunbeds. Sun can bring the pigmentation back.

Usually 5–10 days of redness and flaking. The skin becomes red and tight and flakes for one to two weeks, as after sunburn. The pigment fades gradually over the following weeks.
