Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Skin tags are small, soft, benign growths of skin that often sit on the neck, in the armpits, under the breasts or on the eyelids. They are harmless but can catch on clothes and jewellery. The practitioner removes them with laser, electrocautery (diathermy), freezing or small scissors, depending on size and location.

  • Usually one treatment.
  • The price follows the number of areas.

  1. The practitioner assesses the skin tags.
  2. The skin is cleaned and numbed if needed.
  3. The skin tags are removed one by one.
  4. The area is covered if needed.

The treatment takes 15–30 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 1–3 out of 10. Larger skin tags are numbed first.

  • Common: redness, swelling, tenderness and a scab.
  • Uncommon: lighter or darker skin in the area for a few months.
  • Rare: infection, scarring or the lesion coming back.

  • Keep the area clean and dry for the first day.
  • Let the scab fall off by itself, and do not pick at it.
  • Use a mild ointment if the practitioner recommends it.
  • Protect the area from the sun for at least two months, with a high-factor sunscreen or a plaster.

Usually a few days with small scabs. Small wounds or scabs heal within 1–2 weeks.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • All skin lesions must be assessed before treatment. A mole or spot that changes, itches, bleeds or looks different from the others must be examined by a doctor.
  • Laser and freezing destroy the tissue, so it cannot be examined afterwards. An uncertain lesion is therefore removed surgically and sent for examination.

  • Skin tags on the neck, in the armpits, under the breasts or in the groin.
  • Skin tags that irritate or catch on clothes and jewellery.

  • Lesions that change, bleed or are uncertain. They must be examined by a doctor and are often removed surgically.
  • Growths that bleed, grow quickly or are hard. They must be examined by a doctor.

Treated skin tags do not come back, but new ones can form over time.

  • Lesions that have not been assessed, or that could be malignant.
  • Infection or inflammation in the area.
  • Sunburnt or recently tanned skin, for laser treatment.
  • Pregnancy, when the treatment is not urgent.
  • A tendency to raised, growing scars (keloids).

Contact the clinic if the area becomes redder, more swollen, warm or painful after two days, if pus appears, or if you get a fever. Also see a doctor if a treated lesion grows back or changes.
