What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

A gentle laser peel removes dead skin cells and gives the skin a smoother surface. In a carbon peel, also called a Hollywood peel, a thin layer of carbon is applied to the skin. The laser heats and removes the carbon together with dead skin cells and excess oil. Cold laser peels treat the skin surface with little heat.

  • Can be taken as a single treatment, for example before an occasion.
  • For an effect on pores and blemished skin: usually three to six treatments two to four weeks apart.

  1. The practitioner assesses your skin.
  2. The skin is cleansed, and for a carbon peel a thin layer of carbon is applied.
  3. Your eyes are protected, and the skin is treated with the laser.
  4. The skin is cleansed and treated with moisturiser and sunscreen.

The treatment takes 30–60 minutes.

Most people rate the discomfort 1–2 out of 10. It feels like heat and small snaps.

  • Common: slight redness and warmth.
  • Rare: irritation, small spots or changed pigment.

  • Use mild skincare and moisturiser.
  • Use a high-factor sunscreen.
  • Wait two to three days before using acids and scrubs.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Sunburnt or recently tanned skin.
  • Infection, inflamed spots, eczema or wounds in the area.
  • Tablet treatment for acne in the last six months.
  • Medicines that make the skin sensitive to light, unless the practitioner has cleared it.
  • A tendency to raised, growing scars (keloids).

Contact the clinic if you get blisters, increasing pain or swelling, pus, yellow crusts or a fever. Also contact the clinic if a cold sore appears after treatment around the mouth.
