Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Laser can be used for several nail problems. For nail fungus, the laser heats the nail and the fungus beneath it. Thickened nails are filed down first, and warts around the nail are treated like other warts. For nail psoriasis, laser can calm the changes. The practitioner often takes a nail sample first, because other conditions can look like fungus.

  • Nail fungus: usually three to four treatments four weeks apart.
  • The healthy nail grows out within 6–12 months for toenails.

  1. The practitioner examines your nails and takes a sample if needed.
  2. A thickened nail is filed down.
  3. The nail and the skin around it are treated with the laser.
  4. You get advice on care at home.

The treatment takes 30–60 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 1–3 out of 10. It feels like heat.

  • Common: warmth and slight tenderness.
  • Rare: blisters or discolouration of the skin around the nail.

  • Keep your feet clean and dry, and change socks daily.
  • Disinfect or change your shoes after the treatment to avoid reinfection.
  • Wear sandals in changing rooms and showers.

No downtime.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • The nail does not look healthy until the new nail has grown out. This often takes 6–12 months for toenails.
  • The fungus can come back. Good foot hygiene and treating your shoes help.
  • For widespread nail fungus, a doctor may recommend antifungal medicine.

  • Fungus in toenails or fingernails.
  • Thickened nails.
  • Warts around the nail.
  • Nail psoriasis, together with other treatment.

  • Diabetes with wounds or poor circulation in the feet, unless a doctor has cleared you.
  • Nail problems that have not been examined.

The new nail grows out gradually. Maintenance and good foot hygiene help keep the fungus from coming back.

  • Wounds or infection around the nail.
  • Poor circulation in the feet.

Contact the clinic or a doctor if the skin around the nail becomes red, swollen, warm or painful, or if pus appears.
