Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

In a thread lift, a doctor places thin, dissolvable threads under the skin with a needle or cannula. Threads with small barbs can lift and hold the tissue in place, for example along the jawline, cheeks or brows. Smooth threads (mono threads) do not lift but stimulate the skin to form new collagen. The threads are made of substances the body breaks down, such as PDO, and dissolve within 6–12 months.

  • Usually one treatment with lifting threads.
  • Mono threads for skin quality are often given as two to three treatments.
  • A check-up after two to four weeks.

  1. The doctor goes through your face, your wishes and what is realistic.
  2. The skin is cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic.
  3. The threads are placed under the skin through small entry points.
  4. The threads are adjusted, and the ends are trimmed.

  • Avoid alcohol for the last day, and supplements such as fish oil and ginkgo for the last week.
  • Tell the clinic about blood-thinning medicines and earlier treatments in the face.
  • Plan a few quiet days after the treatment.

The treatment takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the number of threads.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

With local anaesthetic, most people rate the discomfort 3–5 out of 10. Afterwards the area can be tender for a few days.

  • Common: swelling, bruising, tenderness and tightness.
  • Uncommon: small dimples or irregularities, visible thread ends or asymmetry, which often settle.
  • Rare: infection, a thread needing removal, or nerve irritation.

  • Avoid opening your mouth wide, chewing hard food and making big facial expressions for the first two weeks.
  • Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised for the first week.
  • Do not massage your face, and avoid facials for four weeks.
  • Avoid hard exercise, saunas and hot baths for a week.

Usually 3–7 days of swelling. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common in the first week. The skin can look a little uneven or puckered at first before it settles.
