  • Removes or lightens PMU
  • Brows, eyeliner and lips
  • Makes room for a new treatment

Expected results

The pigment becomes gradually lighter through the series. Many people are rid of it completely, but some colours are hard to remove.

Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

The laser shatters the pigment from permanent makeup or microblading into small particles, which the body removes gradually. The treatment can remove or lighten brows, eyeliner and lip pigment. Permanent makeup pigment often contains iron oxide and white pigment, which can darken before it lightens. A test patch is therefore often done first.

  • Usually three to six treatments six to eight weeks apart.

  1. The practitioner assesses the pigment and your skin, and often does a test patch.
  2. The area is cleaned and cooled, and numbing cream can be used.
  3. Your eyes are protected, and the pigment is treated with the laser.
  4. The area is cooled and covered with ointment.

  • Avoid sun and sunbeds on the area for four weeks.
  • If you have had cold sores, tell the clinic before treatment of the lips.

The treatment itself takes 15–30 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 4–6 out of 10. Cooling and numbing cream reduce the discomfort.

  • Common: redness, swelling and scabs.
  • Uncommon: a change in pigment colour, lighter or darker skin, and lighter brow hairs.
  • Rare: scarring, infection or a cold sore outbreak on the lips.

  • Keep the area clean and dry, and use ointment for the first days.
  • Do not pick at scabs.
  • Avoid make-up on the area until the skin has healed.
  • Protect the area from the sun between treatments.

Usually 1–2 weeks with scabs. The area becomes red and swollen and can get small scabs. Lips can be swollen for a few days.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Pigment can change colour and turn darker or reddish after the first treatment before it lightens.
  • For eyeliner, the eye is well protected, and only practitioners with special training treat the area.
  • The brow hairs can become lighter for a period.

  • Permanent makeup or microblading you want removed or lightened.
  • The wrong shape or colour to correct before a new treatment.

  • PMU done in the last eight weeks. The skin must heal first.
  • Dark or tanned skin, without a test patch.

The pigment becomes lighter with each treatment. Many people can have new permanent makeup once the skin has healed after the last treatment.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Sunburnt or recently tanned skin.
  • Infection, inflamed spots, eczema or wounds in the area.
  • An active cold sore, for treatment of the lips.

Contact the clinic if you get blisters, increasing pain or swelling, pus, yellow crusts or a fever. Also contact the clinic if a cold sore appears after treatment around the mouth.
