Benefits

  • A nail sample if needed
  • Thinner, neater nails
  • With or without laser
  • Advice against reinfection

Expected results

The nail becomes thinner and neater after each treatment. A healthy nail grows out over 12–18 months, and the fungus can come back.

Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Nail fungus is a common fungal infection that makes the nail thick, discoloured and brittle. Other conditions can look similar, so a sample of the nail can confirm that it is fungus. The treatment removes and thins the affected part of the nail, often together with a product painted on the nail or laser. The effect only shows when a healthy nail grows out, which takes 12–18 months for a toenail.

  • A sample of the nail can be taken first.
  • The package has three follow-up appointments where the nail is treated and thinned.
  • Laser can be added.

  1. The practitioner examines your nails and feet.
  2. A sample of the nail is sent for analysis if needed.
  3. The affected part of the nail is filed and thinned.
  4. You get advice on treatment at home and how to keep the fungus from coming back.

Each appointment takes 45–60 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment usually does not hurt. Laser can feel like warmth.

  • Rare: tenderness in the nail after filing or laser.
  • Very rare: small burns after laser.

  • Keep your feet dry, and dry well between the toes.
  • Change socks every day, and let your shoes dry between each use.
  • Treat athlete's foot between the toes, so the infection does not spread to the nails again.
  • Wear slippers in shared showers and changing rooms.

No downtime.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Fungus in many nails or near the nail root can need tablets from a doctor.
  • Nail fungus often comes back. Daily foot care and dry feet help.
  • If you have diabetes, reduced sensation or poor circulation in your feet, you should see an authorised foot therapist.

  • Thick, discoloured or brittle toenails.
  • Nail fungus on one or more nails.

  • Wounds, infection or eczema on the feet.
  • Diabetes with wounds, reduced sensation or poor circulation in the feet. An authorised foot therapist is then the right choice.

Contact a doctor if you get a wound that does not heal, or redness, swelling, warmth, pus or increasing pain in the foot. If you have diabetes, a wound on the foot must be examined quickly.

The result shows when a healthy nail grows out, after 12–18 months for a toenail. Many people need treatment over a long time.
