Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also called photobiomodulation, uses low-energy light that does not heat or damage the tissue. The light is absorbed by the cells and can affect processes involved in repair, inflammation and pain. The treatment is used for muscle and joint pain and to support healing, among other things. The effect varies, and the evidence is strongest for some pain conditions.

  • Usually six to twelve treatments, two to three times a week.
  • The effect is assessed along the way.

  1. The practitioner goes through your symptoms and your health.
  2. You and the practitioner wear protective glasses.
  3. The laser is held against the skin over the area for a few minutes.
  4. If needed, several points are treated.

Each treatment takes 15–30 minutes.
