Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Minoxidil is an active substance used for hereditary hair loss. It increases blood flow around the hair follicles and can lengthen the hair's growth phase. At home, minoxidil is used as a solution or foam on the scalp every day. At the clinic, the treatment can be combined with microneedling or other treatments that support hair growth.

  • Home treatment once or twice daily, following the package leaflet or the practitioner's advice.
  • The effect is assessed after three to six months.
  • The treatment must continue to keep the effect.

  1. The practitioner examines your hair and scalp and goes through your health.
  2. You get a plan for using minoxidil at home.
  3. If needed, the treatment is combined with microneedling at the clinic.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment does not hurt. If it is combined with microneedling, most people rate the discomfort 2–4 out of 10.

  • Common: itching, dryness or dandruff on the scalp.
  • Uncommon: more shedding in the first weeks, because old hairs are replaced.
  • Rare: unwanted hair growth on the face, palpitations or dizziness.

  • Follow the plan for use at home.
  • Wash your hands after use.
  • Keep the solution away from your eyes and mucous membranes.

No downtime.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Read the package leaflet before you use minoxidil at home.
  • The effect only lasts as long as you use minoxidil. If you stop, the new hair gradually falls out again.
  • More shedding in the first weeks is common. It passes.

  • Hereditary hair loss in men and women.
  • Thinning hair on the crown or at the hairline.

  • Sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss with no known cause. A doctor should assess you first.
  • Hair loss after chemotherapy or illness, unless a doctor has cleared you.

The effect shows after three to four months at the earliest and is clearest after a year. It lasts as long as the treatment continues.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Heart disease or low blood pressure, unless a doctor has cleared you.
  • Wounds, eczema or inflammation on the scalp.
  • Allergy to minoxidil or the contents of the solution.

Stop using minoxidil and see a doctor if you get palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, swelling of the hands or feet or sudden weight gain.
