Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme that breaks the hyaluronic acid down. The treatment is used when a result is not as wished, when filler has moved or forms lumps, or as emergency treatment if filler has blocked a blood vessel. The enzyme only works on hyaluronic acid, not on other types of filler.

  • The filler usually dissolves within 24–48 hours.
  • Some people need another treatment after two to four weeks.
  • New filler in the area can be placed after two weeks at the earliest.

  1. The doctor examines the area and goes through what you have had before.
  2. If needed, a small skin test checks that you tolerate the enzyme.
  3. The skin is cleaned.
  4. The enzyme is injected with a thin needle where the filler lies.
  5. The area is massaged lightly, and you are observed for a short while afterwards.

  • Bring information about which filler you had and when, if you have it.
  • Tell the clinic about allergies, especially to bee and wasp stings.

The treatment takes 15–30 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 2–4 out of 10. The enzyme can sting a little when it goes in.

  • Common: swelling, redness, itching and tenderness for a few days.
  • Uncommon: the area may look slightly flatter than before the filler was placed, because the enzyme can also break down some of the body's own hyaluronic acid. It builds up again over time.
  • Rare: an allergic reaction. This is why you are observed after the treatment.

  • Do not massage the area for the first day unless the doctor asks you to.
  • Avoid hard exercise, heat and alcohol for the first day.
  • Wait at least two weeks before new filler in the area.

Usually 1–2 days of swelling. The area can be red and tender, and the skin can feel a little loose once the filler is gone. This usually settles within a few days.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • The enzyme only works on hyaluronic acid. Fillers made of other substances cannot be dissolved this way.
  • If filler has blocked a blood vessel, this is emergency treatment. Contact the clinic at once if you notice the signs: severe pain, pale or bluish skin.

  • Filler that has given a result you are not happy with.
  • Lumps, irregularities or filler that has moved.
  • Filler that causes swelling or a bluish tint under the skin.

  • Filler that is not made of hyaluronic acid. The enzyme does not work on it.
  • Known allergy to the enzyme or to bee and wasp stings, unless a doctor has assessed it.

After dissolving, no maintenance is usually needed. If you want new filler, you can have it after two weeks at the earliest, once the area has settled.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Infection in the area, unless a doctor judges the treatment to be urgent.
  • Known allergy to the enzyme.

Call 113 if you get breathing problems, swelling of the tongue or throat, or feel unwell after the treatment. This can be an allergic reaction. Contact the clinic if you get an itchy rash, increasing swelling or signs of infection.
