Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Juvéderm is a range of hyaluronic acid fillers from Allergan Aesthetics. The products differ in thickness and firmness: soft fillers are used for lips and fine lines, while firmer fillers add contour to the cheeks, chin and jaw. The practitioner chooses the product and amount for the area and your goal.

  • The amount depends on the area: often 0.5–1 ml for lips and lines, and 1–2 ml per side for cheeks.
  • Bigger changes are built up over two treatments at least four weeks apart.
  • A check-up after two weeks.

  1. The practitioner goes through your health, your wishes and what is realistic.
  2. With your consent, photos are taken before the treatment.
  3. The skin is cleaned and disinfected. Numbing cream can be applied.
  4. The filler is placed in small amounts with a fine needle or a blunt cannula.
  5. The practitioner checks the shape as they work and finishes with cooling.

  • Avoid alcohol for the last day, and supplements such as fish oil and ginkgo for the last week. This can mean fewer bruises.
  • Come without make-up on the area.
  • If you have had cold sores, tell the clinic before treatment around the mouth.

The treatment itself takes 20–40 minutes. With the consultation and numbing cream, the appointment takes about an hour.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 2–4 out of 10. Many fillers contain a local anaesthetic, and the practitioner can also apply numbing cream.

  • Common: swelling, redness, tenderness and small bruises where the needle went in. These usually settle within a few days to a week.
  • Uncommon: small lumps or irregularities. They often even out by themselves, and the practitioner can adjust them at the check-up.
  • Rare: infection, a delayed inflammatory reaction with lumps that appear weeks or months after the treatment, or a bluish tint in the skin if the filler lies too close to the surface.
  • Very rare: the filler can block a blood vessel. This can damage the skin and, at worst, the eyesight. The practitioner must therefore know the signs and be able to treat it at once.

  • Do not touch, press or massage the area for the first six hours unless the practitioner asks you to.
  • Wait until the next day before wearing make-up.
  • Avoid hard exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and alcohol for the first 24–48 hours.
  • A clean cold pack in short sessions can reduce the swelling.
  • Sleep with your head slightly raised for the first nights.
  • Wait two weeks before dental treatment and other facial treatments, such as laser and peels, unless the practitioner advises otherwise.

Usually 1–3 days of swelling. Small bruises can last up to two weeks. Most people can go to work the next day. Have the treatment at least two weeks before an important event.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Filler adds volume and contour. It does not lift sagging skin, and it does not soften expression lines the way muscle-relaxing treatment does.
  • The body breaks hyaluronic acid down over time. If needed, a doctor can dissolve the filler with an enzyme.
  • It is safer to build up the result over two treatments than to place a large amount at once.
  • The final result is assessed after two weeks, when the swelling has gone down. The practitioner can then adjust if needed.

  • Loss of volume in the lips, cheeks or temples.
  • A wish for clearer contour of the chin and jaw.
  • Lines and folds around the mouth.

  • Anyone who wants to lift sagging skin. Other treatments may suit better.
  • Anyone who wants a result that lasts forever.
  • Anyone who cannot accept a few days of swelling and bruising.

How long the result lasts depends on the area, the product, your metabolism and how much the area moves. Lips often last 6–12 months, cheeks and chin often 12–18 months. Many people have a top-up when the filler starts to fade.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Infection, wounds, cold sores or inflammation in the area.
  • Known allergy to hyaluronic acid or local anaesthetics, or an earlier reaction to filler.
  • Bleeding disorders. If you take blood-thinning medicine, tell the clinic, but do not stop taking it without agreeing this with your doctor.
  • Active autoimmune disease or medicines that suppress the immune system, unless a doctor has cleared you.
  • Permanent filler already in the area.

Contact the clinic at once if you get severe or increasing pain, pale, white or bluish skin, a net-like pattern in the skin or blisters in the area. Call 113 if your vision becomes blurred or lost. Also contact the clinic if you get a fever, increasing redness, warmth or pus, which can be signs of infection.
