Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Functional back treatment is treatment and training of the back with a focus on function and movement. The practitioner maps your symptoms, how you move and what you want to manage again. The treatment combines tailored exercises, manual treatment and advice on activity and load in daily life.

  • Usually several treatments over a few weeks, with exercises at home between visits.

  1. The practitioner goes through your symptoms, your health and what you want to manage again.
  2. Mobility, strength and load are tested.
  3. The treatment can include exercises, manual treatment and advice on activity.
  4. You get a training programme to use at home.

The treatment takes about an hour.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment can cause discomfort, but should not cause strong pain. The load is adapted to you.

  • Common: muscle soreness after training.
  • Uncommon: symptoms getting worse for a short time.

  • Keep moving. Bed rest makes back pain worse over time.
  • Do the exercises the way you have learned them.

No downtime. You can be stiff for a day or two.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Most back pain is harmless and gets better with activity and time.
  • The effect builds up with regular training, also between visits.

  • Long-lasting or recurring back pain.
  • Stiffness and reduced mobility in the back.
  • Anyone who wants to start training after a back injury.

  • Acute, severe back pain after a fall or accident. Contact a doctor first.
  • Back pain with a fever or signs of nerve damage.

Call 113 or the out-of-hours service on 116 117 if you get numbness in the groin, problems holding or passing urine or stools, or increasing weakness in the legs. Contact a doctor for back pain with a fever, after a fall or accident, or with weight loss you cannot explain.

The effect lasts longest with exercises and activity after the treatment has ended.
