Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

In a lip flip, a few small injections are placed along the edge of the upper lip. The muscle around the mouth relaxes a little, and the upper lip turns slightly outwards. The lip then looks fuller, and less of the gums show when you smile. The treatment does not add volume the way filler does.

  • One treatment.
  • A check-up after two weeks, with adjustment if needed.
  • A new treatment after three months at the earliest.

  1. The doctor or practitioner goes through your health, your medicines and your wishes.
  2. You are asked to use the muscles, for example to frown, so the points can be marked.
  3. The skin is cleaned.
  4. Small amounts are injected with a very thin needle at set points.

The treatment itself takes 10–15 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 1–3 out of 10. The needle is very thin, and each prick lasts only a moment. Numbing is not usually needed.

  • Common: small bruises, tenderness or a mild headache for the first days.
  • Common: it can be a little harder to drink through a straw, whistle or pronounce some sounds for the first weeks.
  • Very rare: an allergic reaction.

  • Stay upright for the first four hours.
  • Do not massage or rub the area for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid hard exercise, saunas and hot baths for the first day.
  • Wait a week before other treatments in the area, such as massage and facials.

No downtime. Small marks and slight swelling where the needle went in usually settle within an hour. You can go back to work the same day.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • A doctor assesses you before the first treatment.
  • The treatment softens the movement that creates the lines. Lines that show even when the face is at rest become softer but do not always disappear completely.
  • The aim is a natural expression. You should still be able to use your face.

  • A thin upper lip that rolls inwards when you smile.
  • A lot of visible gum when you smile.
  • Anyone who wants a change without filler.

  • Anyone who wants more volume in the lips. Filler suits better.
  • Anyone who plays a wind instrument or sings professionally.

The effect builds up over one to two weeks and usually lasts 2–3 months, because the muscle around the mouth moves all the time.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Diseases of the nerves and muscles, such as myasthenia gravis.
  • Infection or inflammation in the area.
  • Allergy to the contents or an earlier reaction to this kind of treatment.
  • Some medicines, for example certain antibiotics, can strengthen the effect. Always tell the clinic which medicines you use.

Contact the clinic if you get a drooping eyelid, double vision or clear asymmetry in the face. Call 113 if you have difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing.
