Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Many people grind or clench their teeth, often at night and without noticing. This can cause worn teeth, sore chewing muscles, headaches and a stiff jaw. Muscle-relaxing injections in the chewing muscle reduce the force of the bite, so the strain becomes less. The treatment does not remove the cause of the grinding.

  • One treatment, with a check-up after four weeks.
  • A new treatment when the symptoms return, after three months at the earliest.

  1. The doctor or practitioner goes through your health, your medicines and your wishes.
  2. You are asked to use the muscles, for example to frown, so the points can be marked.
  3. The skin is cleaned.
  4. Small amounts are injected with a very thin needle at set points.

The treatment itself takes 10–15 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 1–3 out of 10. The needle is very thin, and each prick lasts only a moment. Numbing is not usually needed.

  • Common: small bruises, tenderness or a mild headache for the first days.
  • Common: chewing can feel weaker for the first weeks, especially with chewy food.
  • Very rare: an allergic reaction.

  • Stay upright for the first four hours.
  • Do not massage or rub the area for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid hard exercise, saunas and hot baths for the first day.
  • Wait a week before other treatments in the area, such as massage and facials.

No downtime. Small marks and slight swelling where the needle went in usually settle within an hour. You can go back to work the same day.
