Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

The masseter is the large chewing muscle on the sides of the jaw. When it is large or tense, the jaw can look wide, and many people get tension and headaches. Muscle-relaxing injections in the masseter make the muscle weaker and smaller over time. The jaw can then become slimmer and the tension less.

  • One treatment, with a check-up after four weeks.
  • A slimmer jaw often needs two to three treatments a few months apart.
  • A new treatment after three months at the earliest.

  1. The doctor or practitioner goes through your health, your medicines and your wishes.
  2. You are asked to use the muscles, for example to frown, so the points can be marked.
  3. The skin is cleaned.
  4. Small amounts are injected with a very thin needle at set points.

The treatment itself takes 10–15 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Most people rate the discomfort 1–3 out of 10. The needle is very thin, and each prick lasts only a moment. Numbing is not usually needed.

  • Common: small bruises, tenderness or a mild headache for the first days.
  • Common: chewing can feel weaker for the first weeks, especially with chewy food.
  • Very rare: an allergic reaction.

  • Stay upright for the first four hours.
  • Do not massage or rub the area for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid hard exercise, saunas and hot baths for the first day.
  • Wait a week before other treatments in the area, such as massage and facials.

No downtime. Small marks and slight swelling where the needle went in usually settle within an hour. You can go back to work the same day.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • A doctor assesses you before the first treatment.
  • The treatment softens the movement that creates the lines. Lines that show even when the face is at rest become softer but do not always disappear completely.
  • The aim is a natural expression. You should still be able to use your face.

  • A wide jaw due to a large chewing muscle.
  • Tension in the jaw or headaches from the chewing muscle.
  • A wish for a softer, slimmer face shape.

  • A wide jaw caused by bone structure or fat. The treatment then has little effect.
  • Jaw pain that has not been investigated. A dentist or doctor should assess you first.

Less tension is often felt after one to two weeks. A slimmer jaw shows gradually over four to eight weeks. The effect usually lasts 4–6 months, often longer with repeat treatments.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Diseases of the nerves and muscles, such as myasthenia gravis.
  • Infection or inflammation in the area.
  • Allergy to the contents or an earlier reaction to this kind of treatment.
  • Some medicines, for example certain antibiotics, can strengthen the effect. Always tell the clinic which medicines you use.

Contact the clinic if you get a drooping eyelid, double vision or clear asymmetry in the face. Call 113 if you have difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing.
