Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Gel nails are built up with gel that is cured under a UV or LED lamp. The gel can strengthen your own nails or extend them with tips or forms. The nails are shaped and filed, and get colour or decoration. After three to four weeks, the nails have grown out and need a refill.

  • A new set first.
  • A refill every three to four weeks.

  1. The nails are cut, filed and prepared.
  2. Tips or forms are fitted if the nails are to be extended.
  3. The gel is built up in layers, and each layer is cured under the lamp.
  4. The nails are shaped, filed and given colour or top coat.

  • Come with clean nails without oil or cream.
  • Tell the practitioner about allergies and skin problems on your hands.

A new set takes about two hours. A refill takes 1.5–2 hours.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment does not hurt.

  • Common: the polish loosening or chipping at the edge after a few weeks.
  • Uncommon: an allergy to acrylates, with itching, redness and blisters around the nails.
  • Rare: thin, weak nails after many rounds, or an infection under a nail that has lifted.

  • Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
  • Apply oil or cream to your cuticles and hands every day.
  • Do not pick or peel off gel polish or gel nails. This takes layers of the nail with it and makes it thin and weak.
  • Come back for a refill or removal once the nails have grown out, usually after three to four weeks.

No downtime.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Gel polish and gel nails contain acrylates. Some people develop an allergy to them over time. The allergy can be lasting and can also apply to acrylates in dental fillings and medical devices. Tell the practitioner straight away if you get itching, redness, blisters or swelling around the nails.
  • The lamp that cures the polish gives a small dose of UV radiation. You can apply sunscreen to your hands before the treatment.
  • If a gel nail lifts, moisture and fungus can collect under it. Come to the clinic for a repair.

  • Short or weak nails that should be extended or strengthened.
  • Anyone who wants strong nails with colour for several weeks.

  • Nail fungus, infection or wounds around the nails.
  • Eczema or a rash on the hands or around the nails.
  • A known allergy to acrylates.

Contact the clinic or a doctor if you get itching, redness, blisters or swelling around the nails or on the skin, or signs of infection such as pus, warmth and increasing pain.

The nails stay neat for three to four weeks. A refill fills in where the nails have grown out.
