Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Gel polish is nail polish that is cured under a UV or LED lamp. The polish dries straight away, is stronger than ordinary polish and stays glossy for two to three weeks. Shellac is a well-known brand. With a refill, the old polish is removed, and the nails get new polish.

  • New polish every two to three weeks.

  1. Old polish is removed gently, and the nails are cut and filed.
  2. The cuticles are cared for, and the nails are prepared.
  3. Base coat, colour and top coat are applied in thin layers.
  4. Each layer is cured under the lamp.

  • Come with clean nails without oil or cream.
  • Tell the practitioner about allergies and skin problems on your hands.

The treatment takes 60–90 minutes.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment does not hurt.

  • Common: the polish loosening or chipping at the edge after a few weeks.
  • Uncommon: an allergy to acrylates, with itching, redness and blisters around the nails.
  • Rare: thin, weak nails after many rounds, or an infection under a nail that has lifted.

  • Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.
  • Apply oil or cream to your cuticles and hands every day.
  • Do not pick or peel off gel polish or gel nails. This takes layers of the nail with it and makes it thin and weak.
  • Come back for a refill or removal once the nails have grown out, usually after three to four weeks.

No downtime.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Gel polish and gel nails contain acrylates. Some people develop an allergy to them over time. The allergy can be lasting and can also apply to acrylates in dental fillings and medical devices. Tell the practitioner straight away if you get itching, redness, blisters or swelling around the nails.
  • The lamp that cures the polish gives a small dose of UV radiation. You can apply sunscreen to your hands before the treatment.
  • Let the clinic remove the gel polish, so your nails are not damaged.

  • Anyone who wants glossy nails that last for several weeks.
  • Nails that chip easily with ordinary polish.

  • Nail fungus, infection or wounds around the nails.
  • Eczema or a rash on the hands or around the nails.
  • A known allergy to acrylates.

Contact the clinic or a doctor if you get itching, redness, blisters or swelling around the nails or on the skin, or signs of infection such as pus, warmth and increasing pain.

The polish stays glossy for two to three weeks, until the nails have grown out.
